Centropa is an unusual project which brings to life the world of the Central and Eastern European Jews thanks to its connection of oral histories with visual memories. To satisfy the needs of the project, interviews are to be conducted with almost 1400 European Jews and items like photographs or family documents will be collected. Following editing they will be placed in the project archive at www.centropa.org where a modern, interactive online museum is being created, bringing us closer to the history and culture of the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th Century via the personal histories of people.

The project is focused above all on Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and the Balkans. The website is available in English, German and Hungarian language versions and, thanks to a special search function, it is possible to find information which can be used as research material, for education purposes and remembrance. The main project headquarters is to be found in Vienna and CHS UJ, as a partner in the project, is coordinating the editing of the interviews conducted by the students and doctoral students of JU.
